Star Citizen / Squadron 42
Because Falcon 4 just isn't high-tech enough!
You've probably aleady heard of this, but if not the short version is it's essentially a Wing Commander MMO.
Star Citizen
It's a crowd funded game (which means it's funded by players paying for it, rather than a Publisher - which is good because publishers are evil fat cat dream destroying devil spawn as any PC gamer will know by now. ) made by Chris Roberts, who made Wing Commander in the 90's - and it comes in two parts, first there's Squadron 42 (not as good as Squadron 19) which is a singleplayer Fighter Pilot campaign like Wing Commander, then there's Star Citizen, which is an online MMO set after Squadron 42 with an open sandbox universe where you can do what you want, be a Privateer or a Pirate or a Bounty Hunter or a Bus Driver or whatever.
So far it's made over $23 million (which is about £14 million, or 10 Spitfires) and is going to have lots of nerdtastic features like full flight sim support for Sticks and TrackIR and extra MFD screens, and fancy physics and this that and everything else, with the ability to fly big multiplayer ships with turrets and ECM stations and such, and get out of your ship and walk around in big ships and planets and boarding combat etc, so you could have someone with their own Corvette or Carrier, and other players as a Fighter Squadron on board it.
It's not out until late next year, so at the moment the only thing released is a Hangar Module for those that have pre-ordered the game and bought a ship, where you can wander around your ship hangar and look around the cockpit and such (endless pre-flight checks!) though there's meant to be a dogfight alpha this December, then the alpha/beta of the full game next year leading up to release.
At the moment I have an Anvil Aerospace F7C Hornet, which is a civilian version of the Carrier based Fighter you see in the Squadron 42 video, if you pre-order you can buy all sorts of different ships, though they're quite expensive at the moment as it's to support the game Development, i.e the big multi-person RSI Constellation is about £140 - but you can just buy them in game with in game money after you've played for a while.
Anyway I think it could be unbelievably good if they don't cock it up.
Now for some Space-Car Commercials!
Although personally I'd rather have the 10 Spitfires.

Judging by the Aurora Commercial you must be some kind of Space Hipster then, Hink.

Re: Star Citizen / Squadron 42
I think the Aurora is the basic ship, so you'd probably have to pay a bit more to switch to a better ship even if you sold your original one - although if you're an early backer you might get things cheaper than for other people, so not sure how much it'd cost for you.
Or you could just wait a year and buy a better ship with in game money instead.

Skip, we need you to pay £3400 to get the Space Marshal Package with an Idris-P Corvette as the Squadron 19 Flagship - so we have somewhere to park our fighters!
You're our glorious leader, don't be selfish.

Might set up a Squadron 19 Organisation if anyone else fancies it? Unless Skip wants to do it of course.

Squadron 42 is overrated.

Re: Star Citizen / Squadron 42
For anyone else planning on buything the game, the Dogfighting Alpha is due out next month (basically a pew pew deathmatch type thing), and there are only 6,500 Alpha slots left (goes down a few hundred a day usually) so if you want to get in on that you best buy a package soon (presuming they don't decide to raise the number of Alpha slots. )

Duncan? ..no he's over rated, I've been carrying him for years, even after I was blinded by a paintball. No, I'm getting ready to rumble solo this time...psyche!

Re: Star Citizen / Squadron 42
I got an email on the Star Citizen forums about a Squadron affiliation with the UEE Naval Reserve:
I thought it sounded interesting anyway, like Space HC.
Maybe they'll let us park in their Carrier.
UEE Reserve wrote:I was browsing through the org listings and came across yours and I think it'd fit well as one of the Squadrons of the UEENR, so I'd like to invite your Org to become an affiliate member of the UEE Naval Reserve. Our aim is to unite like minded Squadrons for fleet ops and provide a support structure, you'd still retain your independence but would be able to call on help from other Squadrons within the UEENR. Heres a video about the UEENR that will help you understand how we're structured and what we aim to achieve.
