Refueling! Empty Refueling!

Post  MJDixon Thu Mar 28, 2013 10:50 pm

So after many many circuits trying to get contact I eventually managed to get linked up! Huzzah!

Refueling! Refueling

Thankfully it's much easier to stay connected than it is to initially get connected.

But then he decided to turn while I was refueling...

And who's idea was it to put the refueling probe thingie behind the cockpit?!

I assume from your successful refuelling that you managed to get your TMS-UP and radar stuff working?

I got the radar lock sorted during last night's sorties before we tried our mid-air refueling

I actually LOL'ed after reading this. Laughing

Some hints:
- When requesting vectors to tanker with AWACS, they'll give you a TACAN-channel as well. When you're in close range to the tanker, it's better to use this to gauge your distance. (FCR might lose track at some point, and you don't want to neuter everyone on the refueler with your radar beam Razz )
- Put the FPM-marker on the boom end to be in the "pre-contact position". The PCP seems to be quite narrow though, so you might sometimes need a few minutes to get it right.
- Once you're cleared to contact, just ease the throttle forward a bit to catch up with the tanker. Once you're seeing the belly, stabilize and the boom operator will do the work for you.
- In most cases, the tanker will have turned at least once before you're in the PCP. Try and see which side he turns to then, to know what side he'll turn to when you're in close formation. Iirc, he warns you of the upcoming turn 1 minute before initiating it.

I'm currently busy researching the joys VHF Omnidirectional Range and Distance Measuring Equipment radio navigation systems for a university assignment.

At least it might come in handy with Falcon 4. Razz

I got a Thrustmaster Warthog about 3 weeks ago, which I've been using for Falcon.
