Our flight was vectored to by Tophat to patrol a line between Rochester and Manston at angels 30. Approaching the area, we received several reports of possible 109s probing our defences around the Dover area. Reported contacts were difficult to confirm as many of our RDF chain stations were out of action, and TopHat was relying on the Observer core. After patrolling for a while, we finally received a firm order to intercept an inbound fighter sweep approaching from Dover at 28K. Turning south we headed towards them, Tophat informing us that there were also friendlies in the area.

Approaching the coast Red 1 reported 3+ contacts to the south, and took Red 2 for a closer look. Myself and Red 4 held back to provide cover. Red 1 confirmed 109s and friendlies and proceeded, with Red 2, to try to engage. However, more 109s appeared and forced Red 1 and Red 2 break off and head north towards myself and Red 3. As they flew under us I noticed Red 2 was being pursued by a lone 109. I turned sharply to port and dove in on the 109. The speed of the dive meant I closed quickly and I managed to get a quick burst off, scoring multiple hits. The 109 then entered a dive which I did not follow. I did notice he was streaming something, so I broke off to regroup.

After regrouping we continued our patrol. We received various reported contacts of 109 fighter sweeps in the area but we saw more friendlies than enemy. A low bomber raid was spotted, which Hurricanes were vectored to intercept. I did try to engage a fleeing flight of 109s, but one got too close for comfort and I had to break off without firing.

The remaining sortie passed uneventfully and we all returned successfully to our airfield.

Thanks Speedy, good show. Smile

Although we withdrew because the 109s were holding out over the Channel/withdrawing when we moved in so I wanted to drag them closer to the coast, rather than because they had reinforcements.

Don't worry, Speedy - I'll just edit your report to make me look good, perks of command and all that. Laughing
