Arriving at Lille AF, Speedy77 parked his bicycle and entered the 19 Squadron Dispersal hut. It was deserted. He noticed the back door was swinging to and fro, two upturned chairs next to the chess table, and two cups next to the still steaming freshly boiled kettle. Picking up Bader, who was frantically dragging himself towards his cat flap, Speedy said “just me and you again old chum!” Watching Bader now frantically washing himself, a thought flashed into Speedy’s head ‘were the rest of the Squadron avoiding him?’. “Surely they still can’t be mad about the Ale incident?” he thought.

Speedy had suggested that they serve alcohol free ale in the mess. As the rest of the squadron lashed him to a target drone and the CO was firing up his Spit 2, Speedy stressed that it was in the interest of Health and Safety, and he was only doing his duty as Health and Safety Monitor (yes he has a badge and a clipboard). Pointing out that they should be using a square lash knot rather that the inferior clove hitch didn’t help either. It was only the timely arrival of the Brewery delivery lorry that calmed things down, and Britney reluctantly had to cut him down to save a valuable target drone.

Rubbing the scars resulting from Britney’s ham-fisted work with a knife, Speedy dismissed the crazy thought and strode out to his Spitfire.

Heavy EA had been reported over Nivelles, and air support was called for. Lifting and heading East Speedy gained altitude. Entering the target area at 17K he was glad to see numerous friendlies also over the target, and the Luftwaffles already engaged at a lower alt. Circling the melee Speedy waited for one con start climbing out the sure sign of a109. Spotting a target he dove down on the 109s high eight’ o’clock, scoring hits on the first pass, he pulled up into a left climbing turn bleeding speed and turning in again on the 109. This time he latched on to the F1 and stayed with him as the panicked jerry flipped and flopped his way across the sky. Finally getting a clear guns solution Speedy let rip with a burst of cannon and the 109 flipped no more. Low on alt and cannon Speedy joined up with a group of friendlies and headed North rtbing at Brussels.

Lifting from Brussels Speedy, alone once again, headed back into the target area at 10K. A 109 had been reported on the deck near to Speedy’s location. Spotting a low con he dove to investigate, right into an approaching group of 4x109s and a 110. With a sinking feeling he turned back north with the 109s following closely. Now with a smoking Spitfire and desperate to keep heading North, speedy rolled and barrel rolled to evade the 109s all the way back to Brussels where the 109s were finally chased away by freindlies. Nursing his battered Spit Speedy managed to land safely.

Once gain lifting from Brussels his third sortie followed the same pattern as the first. Diving on an E4 his cannon rounds found their mark and another Jerry didn’t make it home for sauerkraut. RTBing at Brussels Speedys work was done for the night.

Back in the mess, Speedy took of his monitor badge, and opened up a bottle of ‘Old Thumper’. As he drank, he noticed F/O Dezey creep in the back door clutching a handful of sticks. With a startled look as he noticed Speedy in a dark corner, he said, “…ah, Speedy you’re here…erm ...I’m just picking up my girl guides knot manual”. Dezey seemed a lot chirpier; when Speedy told him he was finished for the night. Speedy polished his monitor badge, removed the sticks from his wheels and cycled home, pleased with a good nights work. 2 huns down and no loses.
