Techy PC Question

I know a few of you are IT people, so probably know a lot about making computers, just wondering if this setup makes sense (ie component compatibility, power, future-proof, upgradability etc):

Motherboard: ASUS Rampage III Extreme 3-Way SLI & CrossFireX SATA 6.0GB/s, USB 3.0
Processor: Intel Core i7 Processor Extreme Edition i7-990X (3.46GHz) 6.4GTs/12MB Cache
Graphics: NVidia GeForce GTX 580 3GB, 2 DVI, HDMI, DP - 3D Vision Ready
Memory: 12GB Kingston Hyper-X Tri-DDR3 1600MHz, X.M.P (3 x 4GB Kit)

Excatly my thoughts - and probably overkill. Looks compatible though (didn't figure if the PSU fits the need though).

I never bothered with Extreme Edition CPU's for the simple reason that they do not perform 3 times better. I can buy a new motherboard, standard CPU and RAM for the price difference any time. And I believe that any decent combination of those available in two years, will beat the Extreme from today.
I would go for a mobo with Intel H67 chipset and a I7 2600K CPU (you can use the slightly faster 1333Mhz RAM with the 2600). Looking at my wallet I would even be happy with an i5

Im not up to date with the new fangled gadgetry but that does seem like a beast ! Just one minor point though. WWIIOnline doesnt support SLI and Crossfire atm but as your going for a single graphics card you wont run into compatibility problems. It may also cost you a kidney ;-)

My new rig sounds a little like what you're wanting to put together. Mine works...kind of...as soon as I get online. My drawback seems to be the Healthcare Network here at the building where I'm staying.

I have it all put together now, but I have to get some kind of password to run it on the network at the Healthcare Center where I stay. It seems to run pretty fast. I just could not get on the WWW. last night. I've got to check a couple other items about it too, to make sure its running correctly. Keep your fingers crossed, I hope to be online sometime this weekend or at least by the first of the week. Just in time for the new map to start. As soon as get online I need to add my antivirus program and check all the drives to get them all updated. And get any updates for Windows 7 too.

MJ what is your budget? That is an expensive beast your putting together. I don't think there are compatibility issues that I can see.

If you don't mind telling me your budget, I'll run a spec check with the guys at OcUK. Would be interesting to see what they make of the spec and as to what suggestions they make based on your budget.

Oh and finally, there is no such thing as future proof!
