Yesterday up near the Zee's I spot a lone 190 a good 2k below me and break into a shallow dive while reducing throttle to minimum so I don't lock up and go racing past him (Spitty IX). He notices me and dives down to a German held town obviously to hug the town AI AA. Ok, the race is on and I kick down the throttle to max power only it takes freaking forever for the engine to rev back up so I can get some power back. In the end by the time my power was regained he had made to the town and I had to break off contact only to get whacked by the radar guided AA within it's first shots. Fricking death by enemy forces!

So what do I do so something like this doesn't happen again? Reduce throttle to only 25% power and deploy flaps? Cut power to 50%? Suggestions....

regards,
Brasi

If the engine is taking a long time to rev back up to full power it might be that you've stalled the propeller when you reduced the throttle to minimum - you can tell when it does that because if you then go to full power again the engine won't respond and it will sound quiet as if it were turned off) - until it eventually kicks in again and starts to rev.

If you are getting this, a good thing to do is, rather than going to minimum throttle in a dive - constantly move the throttle between about 0% and 20% (ie never keep it stuck at 0% for a prolonged period) - this keeps the engine awake and stops it from going into a stall.

As for the 190s, sadly we usually go for the tactic of trying to bounce them and hope they don't see us, then if they spot us and break we just leave because the 190s will play silly buggers all day long and/or just run away. Razz

That sounds like exactly what happened. Thanks for the tip, I won't be making that mistake again.

Yeah in hindsight when I saw him diving for the town I should have broke off immediatley and kept my altitude. Stupid move on my part and even stupider to die by the dreaded "enemy forces"

prop stall effects happen when the airspeed over the prop is too high for the prop-pitch regulator to handle - (the pitch regulator rotates each prop laterally to get the best angle of attack), when the airspeed and prop rotation reach a critical difference, the prop 'stalls' so the only way to snap out of it is to reduce the airspeed over the prop. Best way to do this is to slow down and increase the revs, so set prop to max, full throttle and climb to reduce speed.
