Aircraft Letters Empty Aircraft Letters

I thought this might be slightly interesting to those that like a bit of detail and the like, and yes I do have too much time on my hands. Razz

The RAF Aircraft in game (Fighters at least) have tail letters such as ZK-A, the dash part being where the roundel is in game.

I went around and spawned in with the RAF Squadrons and it seems that the first two letters change depending on what squadron you're in, so everyone in your Squadron will have the same two letters on their plane, which are:

60 Squadron: QO (3 Squadron markings)
61 Squadron: QV (19 Squadron markings)
52 Squadron: GZ (32 Squadron markings)
70 Squadron: ZK (145 Squadron markings)
75 Squadron: JX (1 Squadron markings)
76 Squadron: YB (17 Squadron markings)

The last letter on the craft, however (the one after the roundel) is your own personal letter and is always the same no matter what squadron or craft (Fighters at least) you're in, so far I've found:

Current:

Skip19: P for Peter
Dezey: N for Nan
MJDixon1: J for Jig
Speedy77: D for Dog
Hinkel1: U for Uncle
Pekiti: D for Dog
Hyronimous: E for Easy
Public001: ?
Comet: ?

Inactive:

Steve179: G for George
Dasquirrel: Z for Zebra
CF739: V for Victor
Hrevn: T for Tare
Solidshot: R for Roger
Mortigan: R for Roger
Bonifatus: F for Fox
Lr18: F for Fox
Daira: Q for Queen
Zenior: Z for Zebra
Jougal: O for Oboe
Vienna: T fot Tare
Greg1488: Z for Zebra
Blood28: V for Victor
Yozz76: C for Charlie

I'll try to find other's letters when I fly with them.

So basicly if Skip and Dezey were flying around in Spit IIbs from 61 Squadron, Skip would be QV-P and Dezey would be QV-N

Obviously you're eventualy going to end up with two people with the same personal letter though, you never know - it might turn out to be usefull if we ever run into a bug where all the radar icons and labels turn off and we need to ID eachother. Razz

If you want to find your own letter you can see it when you despawn and it goes to external view.

thats actually pretty cool, because historically 19 Squadron code was QV.

original allied phonetic code...
A Able
B Baker
C Charlie
D Dog
E Easy
F Fox
G George
H How
I Item
J Jig
K King
L Love
M Mike
N Nan
O Oboe
P Peter
Q Queen
R Roger
S Sugar
T Tare
U Uncle
V Victor
W Williamy
X X Ray
Y Yoke
Z Zebra

so I'd be taking S for Sugar, MJ would be taking L for Love!

thanks!

interestingly, their real life counterparts...

QO (3 Squadron) - flew hurricanes on night patrols in scotland
QV (19 Squadron) - Spitfires out of duxford
GZ (32 Squadron) - suffered heavy losses during the BoB and was withdrawn from the frontline until 1942
ZK (145 Squadron Polish) fought during the BoB but also stationed in Malta during the seige.
JX (1 Squadron) famous fighter squadron, based in Berry-au-Bac during the Battle of France
YB (17 Squadron) flew hurricanes during Battle of France.

The Hun better watch out for MJ and the Looooove Machine....

*Plays random 70's music over the cockpit comms*

It'd be good if they let squads pick their own Squadron letters and then let each person select their own personal letter, but then I suppose you'd end up with a lot of LO-L and NU-B etc Razz

Salute,

I was doing some reading about RAF Squadrons and I found a website that listed the RAF Squadron Codes for the different Squadrons. I read where you wrote about the Polish 145 Squadron, and it was listed on the website too. But I also found the RAF 145 Squadron,...it's letters are SO.

ZX for the 145 Squadron Polish
SO for the 145 Squadron RAF

Here is the website address: http://www.btinternet.com/~lee_mail/rafcodes.html

I'm not playing WWII Online right now because my computer does not work. So I'm slowly building a new gaming rig. I'm a WWII Online ALLIED player since June 18, 2001, when I do get back into the game I'll be looking for a squad to join. I'll keep you guys in mind since I enjoy flying. Good hunting!

S!

thanks for that Carolina, I know squadron codes changed quite a bit as the war went on, and I'm pretty sure eventually they amalgamated the Czech and Polish guys into full Squadrons, rather than having a Polish squadron etc.

Anyway, let us know when you have a gaming rig and we'll have to see if we can accomodate you! I'm going to assume (from your name:)) that you are in the US, and we fly mainly GMT times, but we've had a few US/Canada guys coming in and asking about flying with us so you would be more than welcome to join us!

Catch you soon.S!
