First Light - BBC2, Tuesday the 14th, 9:00pm
Dojo keeps telling me to buy the book First Light - but I'm still reading Sharpe's Fury - thankfully, however - the BBC have decided to make a Docu-drama of it as well. (First Light that is, not Sharpe - that would be ITV.)

aha, excellent.
I'll be looking forward to that. Its a really good book by the way. You can get it from Asda for £5. I'm currently reading a yankee book by some eagle squadron pilot, but he's currently gone back to the 8th airforce now and is flying P51 escort missions.

While we're on the subject of books..
I'm currently reading 'The Battle of Britain' by James Holland.
It's not the usual BoB focusing on the air battle, but rather the whole period from when Britain & France declared war through to after the battle proper. Quite interesting as he suggests the war may not have happened at all if the French had got their act together sooner, and both Britain and France hadn't got sucked in by the German propaganda; namely that they were an uber fighting machine with loads of panzers, planes etc. In fact at that time they had fewer, and inferior tanks to the French and most of their army got around on foot or by Horse. Had the allies attacked Germany as soon as they invaded Poland they would have found a shoestring force defending the fatherland. Basically a case of dithering and over cautiousness from French WW1 era generals.
He seems quite anti French but a good read nonetheless.

I seem to remember watching on The World at War that the French actual did invade a bit into Germany at the start of the war, but then sat around for a while before getting bored and leaving again.
Does make you wonder.
Sharpe is quite anti-French as well strangely enough...

It's the memoir of Geoffrey Wellum, a Spitfire Pilot who fought in the Battle of Britain and afterwards, no doubt Dojo will have a more detailed description - on account of the fact that he's read it - and I aint.

yarp
The book follows Geoffry Wellums' fighter pilot career from sixth former and cricket captain (of course) through his ab initio flight training on Tiger Moths and Harvards, through his Spitfire training and getting his wings, then joining his squadron (92 squadron I think) in the Battle of Britain, then on through his career fighting in France until he finally gets posted to a flight training school (burned out as a fighter pilot) at the age of about 21/22.
The passage where he gets lost in fog is one of the most gripping aviation related tales I've read. I hope they do it justice in the docu-drama.
Of course, many of his friends die horribly or get killed in training accidents, I think he gets shot down a couple of times and crashes when he first joins his squadron, but its the short time between his school life and the end of his career that makes the story very poignant.
It's not very heroic like Reach for the Sky, but it captures the feeling of that late summer/autumn from his personal point of view very well.
I'm looking forward to watching it.
Go and buy the book from Asda, its a cracking read. £5!!

I just went to Asda - couldn't find it! Lies damn it - Lies!
Think it's about 80 minutes long in total (presuming it's only a 1 part program) so not sure how much of the book they'll fit in to it, but it's part of the BBC Battle of Britain season, so presumably the Battle of Britain.

My kite has had to undergo a serious rebuild after one too many stuka episodes. I am told she will be ready "soon".

Bump for it being on tonight.
9pm on BBC2
10:30pm on BBC HD
According to the TV Guide: "Contains some strong language". Surely not!
He's pranged his f**king Kite!
Although I suppose 'Yellow nosed Bastards' counts as strong language.

I'm watching the one at 10:30pm on BBC HD, not just for the sake of watching it in HD - went out for a meal this evening so didn't catch the start of it at 9:00pm

Aye it was good, reminded me of the WW1 Film Aces High, in that sort of 'Flying is great, but war is terrible' feel.
Then again it must get very tedious spending so much time stuck in the same cycle of re-used Battle of Britain film clips over and over again...

Think there were probably some clips from the film Dark Blue World (which itself re-used clips from Battle of Britain and Memphis Belle), as well as some new footage and some old stuff with CGI added to it (i.e. with added rain.)
