Date: 6th of September 1939
Time: 20:00 - 21:30 hours
Location: Turnhout, Belgium
Aircraft: 'B' Flight, 3 x Supermarine Spitfire Mk.Ia
Objective: Combat Air Patrol

'B' Flight was detailed to fly combat air patrols around the enemy held town of Turnhout in support of Advanced Air Striking Force and AdA ground attack aircraft, which had been coming under concentrated attack by forward elements of the Luftwaffe.

The flight of three, consisting of myself, Speedy and Hinkel took up our patrol at an altitude of 12,000 feet, flying circuits around the town of Turnhout in an effort to shield the bombers below us from enemy attack.

During the course of the patrol we encountered a number of enemy Aircraft under 10,000 feet from the north and east, mainly Bf109E series, as well as a small number of Junkers Ju87 ground attack aircraft - destroying a total of 7 Bf109s and 1 Stuka across a number of combat air patrols, all of which were destroyed before they were able to inflict casualties on our bomber forces, losing three of our own Aircraft in the process - two Pilots presumed killed, one missing but seen to make an emergency landing near to the front.

We continued our combat patrols over target until the bombers returned to base, our ground forces having called off the attack due to being unable to capture the town.

"I look forward confidently to the exploits of our Fighter Pilots - these splendid men, this brilliant youth, who will have the glory of saving their native land, their island home, and all they love, from the most deadly of all attacks."

- Winston Churchill
