'Sharp Picture' Setting
Wondering if anyone uses the new 'Sharp Picture' setting that was introduced in the weapon mod patch, it makes the textures clearer and more 'HD' compared to standard, I tried to make some comparison pics but it's a bit hard to take pictures of the same thing twice.
Bottom left is normal, top right is sharper
Standard Image
Sharper Image
It makes it a lot easier to read dials and the like through just glancing at the cockpit as the dial textures are a lot clearer - they say it also makes it easier to spot other aircraft against the ground as well, though I'll have to test that, as it also makes the ground itself more detailed, so it might be harder to pick out Aircraft detail from all the other detail.
Main issue with it on my GTX580 is that any of the 'Post Effect' settings disable the in-game Anti-aliasing, meaning I have to enhance it with the Nvidia Control Panel Anti-Aliasing settings, which doesn't quite look as good, and presumably takes more out of the graphics card.

I havent tried it as yet. Sounds odd though that if you set AA to be controlled by your card it doesnt look as good. I would have thought that AA settings in game only give the same instructions to the card as the Nvidia panel ie its always the card that does the processing. Btw when in game do the AA settings actually get greyed out so you can see they are not available ? (Info for incase I try it)

Re: 'Sharp Picture' Setting
Tried the sharp settings tonight after the wwii server went down. Looks v nice to me as u say much easier to see dials (If you can crane your neck to the right angle)
I also turned on High Constrast as I think things looked a little washed out with sharp settings on. It didnt effect my fps much at all though I havent tried AA above 2 yet. I could still change my AA settings they werent greyed out so Im not sure if they were still working or had been disabled like yours MJ.
I went on the realism server. Took off and was totally lost with mins. That cockpit compass is horrble ! So I turned on the mini dials, headed west and hoped for the best. Finally found the frontline and tooled around over it at about 3k before seeing something below me. I dived down but couldnt tell what it was. Closer closer still couldnt tell until I went under it looked up and saw the black crosses. Having missed a perfect shot I then proceeded to try and boom and zoom it. Still a bit tricky as I cant always tell how steep Im climbing and the Spad VII 150hp doesnt seem to have a speedo. It was a two seater and was smoking by now. I lost sight of it for a while then thought I'd found it again. Turns out this was a different scout. No smoke and a different colour. I hammered away at it again and this time its gunner fired back. I think I forced it to land and was just giving it a friendly straffe when I remembered it wasnt the done thing and headed for home. Home being anywhere on the W side of the brown bit. I had no hope of finding a runway lol. Anyway once again unbeknown by me my engine had been damaged. I did see smoke but wasnt sure if it was new or just the usual trail, until of course my engine conked out and I glided it down for what looked like being a nice landing until it tripped over its nose again. No kills :-( If I can find the record button next time I'll post it somewhere maybe.

Sounds like a good sortie Dezey! It amazes me how many crutches we rely on in WWIIOL, Icons, GPS etc.
You need to be constantly checking the map and referencing landmarks, towns, rivers, airfields, the front line or interestingly shaped woods. Having an idea where you are in relation to the front line is important too!
I know it sounds a bit daft, but just fly some offline cross country flights - use the Reims 'Fly Now' map, pick one of the airfields NE of your take off point, then check out landmarks and headings before you take off - then head NE, keep an eye on your heading (the mini dials are great for this) and try and navigate to the other field using the landmarks you had noticed in your 'pre flight'.
What I find helps is to say to myself "I think I'm here, so checking the map there should be a forest north of me and a river to the east" then check that with the view outside.
Of course while all this is going on, you need to keep an eye on your 6, watch out for Archie and the Hun in the Sun, discern friendlies from enemies and keep an eye on your fuel and engine temperature. And don't forget to cock your guns!!

Well there's your problem, Dezey - how is the English Channel at this time of year?
Usually when I try to get a navigational fix I look around and try to find a unique landmark, such as a U shaped forest, or two forests of a certain shape next to each other - then try to find the same shape on the map - then find a main road or railway line and follow that.
Maybe we should have a cross coutry navigation training session, with a novice navigational chap (i.e Dezey (or Skally, as he's thinking about it too) in the front seat of an R.E.8, and an instructor in the back, pointing out landmarks and such - and making sure they don't get lost.
A lot of it is also to do with pre-planning your flights, i.e picking out landmarks before you take off, rather than just flying the compass heading straight to your objective.
For example:
Let's say you took off from Nesles-la-Montagne, for a flight to Pomacle, across the front, now in WW2OL you'd probably just fly straight there (if you didn't mind getting bounced ) like so:
Now that's all well and good in RoF as well, so long as you trust your ability to read a compass, and get navigational fixes along the way from places like Ville en Tardenois and Reims, however if you wanted to be extra sure not to get lost you could go the long way around, like such:
Find the river next to the Airfield, follow it east, wait until you see a bridge crossing the river south to north, then follow that main road to Reims, take the eastern road out of town and then you're at the big brown bit!
Here's a video from the future! (We've seen it before, but it's more useful now. )
